Traralgon Football Club accreditedThe Traralgon Football Club is the latest recipient of accreditation under Latrobe City’s Gaming Accreditation Charter By Latrobe City Council - 4th July 2001 - Back to News The Traralgon Football Club is the latest recipient of accreditation under Latrobe City’s Gaming Accreditation Charter, which is designed to minimise the impact of gambling on the community.
In presenting the Accreditation Charter on Thursday, Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said that five gaming facilities had now been accredited.
"Gaming venues seeking five star accreditation are rated on a points system, which takes into account such things as the availability of information on responsible gambling, the provision of a range of other recreational facilities by the premises, and the prominent display of a clock to the majority of gamblers in the gaming area. They provide a maximum $1000 cash pay-out to winners, display relevant information such as the availability of counselling services for problem gambling, and provide an informal seating area with free tea and coffee as an alternative outside of the gambling area," Cr Jenkins explained.
Venue manager at the Traralgon Football Club, Peter Leslie, said a more responsible attitude towards gaming had become quite apparent in the wider community in recent times.
"People come here to enjoy company, it’s a social avenue for most people. Most of them play the machines that cost a few cents a game and have a lot of fun for just a few dollars. They tend to develop social relationships with other patrons and staff, and generally just have a good time," Mr Leslie said.
"I think the publicity pointing to potential problems for some people has got through to those that might be affected. There are self exclusion programs which people who recognise they have a problem voluntarily sign up to, which then imposes restrictions on their access to gaming premises. These programs in conjuction with responsible venue management seem to be having the desired effect".
Cr Jenkins said the accredited venues had all shown a particularly responsible attitude, recognising that gambling can sometimes have a devastating effect on some people and families; and taking steps within their premises to provide the facilities many people want, while minimising the harm the impact of gambling may have on some members of the community.
"Where a club obtains a five-star accreditation, Latrobe City waives the normal Council rates that the club would pay, providing that the club instead makes a payment of 110% of what those rates would be, into a special Gambling Impact Fund," Cr Jenkins explained.
"All monies paid into this Gambling Impact fund are administered by the Latrobe City Trust, and grants from those funds provide support for a wide range of worthwhile community programs. It should be stressed that these programs are not directed at solving gamblers’ personal financial difficulties, or necessarily for counselling specific problem gamblers, but are used for promoting social and economic development in local communities through the funding of worthwhile programs and projects which provide alternatives to gambling," Cr Jenkins said.
The Traralgon Football Club joins the Yallourn Bowling Club, The Morwell Club, the Morwell Bowling Club and The Moe Racing Club as being accredited with five stars under the Gaming Accreditation Charter.
