Air scouring ahead for water customersWesternport Water will undertake annual pipe cleaning next month, affecting all premises on Phillip Island and San Remo with reticulated water supply. By Susan Webster - 26th September 2008 - Back to News Water will be cut for some time as teams use high-pressured air to scour the pipes.
Customers will be advised of the shutdown times via a notification delivered to the property. The program is scheduled to start in San Remo on October 7.
Water quality officer Dean Chambers said: "Customers might notice a temporary change in their water’s appearance, a milkiness caused by tiny air bubbles in the water. This disappears when the water is allowed to settle for a while. The water is completely safe to drink.
"Afterwards, we believe some people will definitely notice better-tasting water. Cleaning the pipes will lead to better-quality water, and there will be less need to chlorinate the supply."
Householders will receive letterbox notification several days before works start in their street.
The teams will be working during daytime hours and the work is expected to last for up to a month.
Customers finding air in pipes after the works need simply to run an outdoor tap for a few minutes to get rid of the air.
Managing Director Murray Jackson said: "We are undertaking this work as part of a planned program to improve water quality. It’s a form of housekeeping.
"We apologise if this causes any inconvenience to our customers. The milkiness will pass quickly and the benefits to water quality will be long-lasting."
