Roadside Grazing Permit Fees In Latrobe Being Waived

Latrobe City will waive the annual $36 fee for farmers making new applications for roadside grazing permits or renewing permits.

By Latrobe City - 21st December 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Tony Zimora, said the waiving of fees reflected council’s recognition of difficult times being experienced by the farming community.

Council recognises that our local farmers are doing it tough and this is one small way that Latrobe City can reduce the impact of bushfire and drought in our agricultural community," Cr Zimora said.

Latrobe City’s acting manager local laws, Steve Wright, said that while roadside grazing fees are being waived until further notice, farmers must still apply for permits or renewals. "There are a number of criteria that must be met when grazing stock on roadsides and these are detailed in the permit," Mr Wright said.

"It is essential that those people grazing stock on roadsides hold a valid permit, and in the interests of public safety are meeting the permit conditions."

Mr Wright said that while the onus is on the grazier to ensure grazing stock is adequately confined, motorists should be ever-vigilant when driving through rural areas.

"This is a particularly difficult season where apart from an increase in roadside grazing, livestock may be ‘testing’ fences to get at areas where there seems to still be attractive feed; fires may have destroyed fencing, or fallen tree limbs caused breaches. We all need to make allowances for a possible increase of stock being encountered on our roads. The message when driving - is ‘expect the unexpected’," Mr Wright concluded.

Applications for roadside grazing permits are available at Latrobe City service centres. For further information contact the local laws team, telephone 1300 367 700.
