Organised by the Urban Landcare Program as part of the ongoing "Practical Sustainability" seminar series, the afternoon will combine a presentation with a walking garden tour of approximately 4km to three sites in Cowes. There will also be giveaways, including free native plants, a presentation and afternoon tea.

Included in the tour is the ‘secret’ garden of Olga Bolitho – the winner of this year’s Urban Landcare garden awards, sponsored by Westernport Water.

Another winner, the beachside garden of Stephen Davie, is included in the tour, as is the roadside garden of Bhvani Hannon and David Rookes.

Urban Landcare Project Officer, Lisa Wangman said: "The aim of the afternoon is to provide information and real life examples of gardening for wildlife.

"By incorporating indigenous plants and habitat features into our gardens, we can increase biodiversity and attract local wildlife.

"Part of the presentation will include a photographic timeline of the construction of an indigenous demonstration garden in Surf Beach showing how this can be done."

The presentation will also include an overview of information available on the web and through existing programs.

The presentation and walking garden tour leaves the Cowes Heritage Centre, next to the library at 1.30pm.

There is no cost for the afternoon which includes presentations, afternoon tea, walking garden tour and indigenous plant giveaways to help start your own habitat garden.

For more information and to RSVP (essential for afternoon tea and indigenous plant giveaways) please call Urban Landcare Project Officer, Lisa Wangman on 0409 366 914 by Saturday, September 24.
