By news@gippsland - 8th July 2005 - Back to News The Code provides the overall direction for managing fire on public land in Victoria and the community has an important role to play in setting this direction. Public meetings and information sessions were held statewide in April and May and feedback from these consultations has been incorporated into the draft Code.
The draft of the revised Code is now open to public comment and will be the subject of a further series of public information sessions across the state during July and August. Notice of these meetings will be advertised in major metropolitan and regional newspapers.
In Gippsland, these meetings will be held in Orbost at the DSE office on Monday August 1, in Bairnsdale at the DSE office on Tuesday August 2 and in Traralgon at the DSE office on Wednesday August 17. The meetings will all run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, contact the relevant office to register.
Regional Fire Manager, David Tainsh said DSE was committed to ensuring the public had every opportunity to input into the review process and urged people to take advantage of their opportunity to do so.
"DSE values local community knowledge and thanks those who have already contributed to both phases of the Code Review," Mr Tainsh said. "This feedback will be used to shape the Code for the next decade.
"The draft of the revised Code is the product of community consultation, including a Discussion Paper and a series of Regional Information Sessions, as well as contributions from academics, the forest industry, key stakeholders, fire agencies and catchment management authorities.
"Once approved, the new Code will replace the existing Code and set the direction for managing fire on public land for the next ten years."
Public comments and submissions on the Draft Code of Practice and proposed revocation of the existing Code are due by 5:00pm, 2 September 2005. Submissions will not be considered after this date.
