Locust UpdateAfter a busy five weeks on the locust control program, the list of priority targets has been reduced and operations are beginning to wind down prior to the long weekend. By Department of Primary Industries - 1st March 2006 - Back to News DPI will be continuing to monitor locust activity and respond to new hatchings from the recent rain.
Farmers have done an excellent job in actively spraying hoppers. The feeling is that while most of the larger infestations are being found and treated, the challenge has been to locate the smaller clumps that are often in sheltered gullies, close to vegetation or creeks.
Two meetings are planned for this week to update the community on the locust control program and to discuss control options for the future. The first meeting will be in the Swifts Creek Hall on Tuesday March 7th at 7.30 pm. The second meeting will be at the Omeo Football Clubrooms on Wednesday March 8th starting at 9.00 am. Malcolm Campbell, DPI’s senior locust scientist, will be at both meetings. Everyone is welcome to attend.
To report locust sightings call the DPI locust reporting line on 1300 135 559, or for more information visit the DPI website www.dpi.vic.gov.au.
