$1 Million To Upgrade Pondage

Hazelwood Pondage will benefit from a $1 million upgrade and development plan if the Coalition is elected to Government on November 27 said Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe.

By Russell Northe - 22nd November 2010 - Back to News

Making the announcement on site, Mr Northe said the upgrade would provide great benefits to many members of the community, and boost the tourism profile of the region as a destination of choice for those undertaking recreational water activities.

"Hazelwood Pondage is a unique body of water that remains warm all year round at a minimum temperature of approximately 22 degrees. This allows a number of water activities to be conducted at any time of the year, including sailing, waterskiing, canoeing and swimming amongst other pursuits.

"Just recently the Victorian 10km Open Water Swim Titles were conducted on the Pondage and this is just one of many major events hosted locally at Hazelwood.

"Despite the obvious attraction of the warm water there are unfortunately a number of issues that need to be addressed to maintain Hazelwood Pondage as a popular and positive destination.

"Issues such as the lack of reticulated sewerage in the precinct is of significant environmental concern and constraints the growth and development of the site. This $1 million investment through the Coalitions Regional Growth Fund will assist in resolving these particular issues."

Mr Northe said the amenities and public toilets on site are also in need of refurbishment, and this matter has been raised directly with him by Sailability Gippsland, and the Latrobe Valley Yacht Club.

"Groups such as Sailability Gippsland, which introduces people of all ages and abilities to the joys of sailing in a supportive environment, are a real treasure in our region, and it is not acceptable that our facilities are not supporting these groups adequately.

"Hazelwood Pondage has been enjoyed by our community members for decades and it is about time that the facilities are up to a standard that it deserves.

"The Latrobe Valley has enormous scope to increase its tourism potential.

By investing in infrastructure improvements at landmarks such as Hazelwood Pondage, we can make the Latrobe Valley an attractive destination for visitors to this wonderful region.

"Our region depends on tourism to ensure we remain vibrant and successful, and this funding of $1 million will ensure Hazelwood Pondage will remain greatly utilised in years to come."
