Owen Rye ‘25 Years Of Ceramics’An exciting exhibition by Owen Rye entitled ‘25 Years of Ceramics’ will open at the Latrobe Regional Gallery on Saturday 4 August. By Latrobe City Council - 26th July 2007 - Back to News Owen Rye is an experienced artist and long term adventurer in the world of ceramics. In the time that’s passed since he was first exposed to the arts during early tertiary studies, he has worked on archaeological digs in the Middle East, researched for universities both interstate and abroad, taught ceramics at interstate art schools, held many an exhibition - both solo and group collaborations, authored two books on archaeological ceramics and had over 40 journal articles published, won international acclaims, and pioneered a strong network of wood firing potters from across the region which has now extended to potters from all over Australia.
Dr Rye achieves magnificent variety in the pots he creates using scale, colour, shape and surface texture. As an artist Rye is drawn to the mysterious and uncertain; the poetic rather than the scientific, resolving the dilemma between the two through an imaginary process that links the earth’s archaeological past with its uncertain future.
Latrobe Regional Gallery director, Jacqui Hemsley, said that ’25 years of Ceramics’ is a not to be missed exhibition by locally based artist Owen Rye.
"It’s important to support our local artists, and Owen Rye is one of the fantastically talented ones that we like to claim as our own even if he didn’t grow up in the area - Dr Rye moved to Gippsland in the mid 1980s and has had a big impact on the community since. His name is synonymous with ceramics at Monash University’s Gippsland campus," Ms Hemsley explained.
‘25 Years of Ceramics’ will be officially opened by Anna Maas on Saturday, 4 August. Ms Maas is gallery director at Melbourne’s ‘Skepsi on Swanston’, as well as an artist and ceramist with 25 years experience in the arts community.
The exhibition will close on 9 September, 2007.
Latrobe Regional Gallery is open 7 days a week, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm. Admission is free. For more information, contact the Gallery on 5128 5700, email lrg@latrobe.vic.gov.au, or fax 5128 5706.
