Skate party a huge success

The Rush Underage Skate Party, held on Friday 13 June at Stadium 34 Indoor Sports Centre in Moe proved to be a huge hit.

By Latrobe City Council - 20th June 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Team Leader Youth Services, Susan Lloyd said that more than 100 young people from all over Latrobe Valley attended the event.

"The young people listened to music, skated, played games and won prizes. At the door they were given glow necklaces and bracelets, which were very popular," Ms Lloyd said.

"The night was funded by FreeZA, a state government program that offers young people a safe environment to have a good time without drugs and alcohol. FReeZA also encourages young people to help in all areas of organising and promoting the events as well as participating in them," Ms Lloyd explained.

"To have had such a large crowd is proof that young people can and do have a great time without resorting to drugs and alcohol," Ms Lloyd said.

"A variety of local businesses and organisations such as McDonalds, KFC and Sea FM supported the event by offering free give-aways, or encouragement awards with vouchers attached," Ms Lloyd continued.

"For those who overdid the skating, the Australian Red Cross volunteers provided a first aid service to attend to blisters and sore feet," Ms Lloyd added.

Latrobe’s Youth Action Centre worker, Kerryn Super, who helped to co-ordinate the event was extremely impressed with the turnout.

"A number of young people who attended the event were from the Churchill and Moe Youth Action Centres. The Centres are a place where young people aged between 12 to18 years old are able to go to have fun in an activity-focused setting. Having an event like the Rush Underage Skate Party was a highlight in the social calendar and we are pleased that we have had the opportunity to raise the profile of our Youth Action Centres," Ms Super said.

Ms Lloyd added that without the support of Stadium 34 and its staff, the Skate Party would not have been such a success.

"The friendly workers were always on hand. The stadium is an excellent community facility, just perfect for this kind of event," Ms Lloyd concluded.
