Shadow Ministers Attend Farmworld

Liberal Shadow Ministers enjoyed four days speaking with farmers from Gippsland and throughout the state at this year’s Farm World field days at Warragul.

Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis said 10 Liberal Shadow Ministers visited the Warragul field days.

Mr Davis said Bracks Government Treasurer John Brumby used the field days to claim credit for work that was not that of the Bracks Government.

"When opening Farm World, the Treasurer John Brumby made great play of Victoria assuming the leading position as Australia’s key agriculture producing state," Mr Davis said.

"However, it is important to understand that this is totally unattributed to any action on behalf of the Bracks Government and is a direct consequence of the significant drought of New South Wales and Queensland which has been retarding agricultural production for some time."

Mr Davis said Mr Brumby also attempted to claim credit for Kennett Government initiatives.

"John Brumby claimed that the present Member for Narracan had been the instigator of the cattle underpass program," Mr Davis said.

"It is necessary to point out that this program was initiated by the Kennett Government.

"While it is true that the Bracks Government has re-badged the program and brought it under the umbrella of Regional Development, it is not a new initiative nor one which John Brumby or Ian Maxfield are entitled to claim any credit for at all, other than for them to acknowledge by their action that it was a good initiative of the Kennett Government."

Mr Davis said John Brumby was obviously clutching at straws.

"The fact is that the Minister for Agriculture, Bob Cameron, has made a dog’s breakfast of agriculture in Victoria during his term, and was not sighted at Farm World," he said.

"But you wouldn’t expect John Brumby to get up in front of hundreds of farmers and admit that."
