Computer class for the blind

New computer-ware gives hope to the visually impaired

By Rumana McDonald - 3rd October 2000 - Back to News

The Latrobe Valley now offers hope to the visually impaired looking to become computer literate.

The new program, a first for regional victoria, has just been implemented and is ready for use. It works by directing the user through the programs with vocal instructions and commands.

Suitable for those who have a basic knowledge of how to use a keyboard, the software allows for blind people to use the internet, construct e-mail, type letters and create documents.

It provides access to training which will aid in education and the search for employment - a feat which before seemed almost impossible for the visually impaired with no computer skills.

The program is gaining huge support from local neighbourhood houses and TAFE colleges, who are displaying the program to their visitors.

Not only blind people can benefit from the program, but also the elderly, or people who are having trouble educating themselves to be English literate.

Donated by the Lions District, this program proves the Latrobe Valley has a lot to offer so many different people - something to be proud of for everyone.
