Pram bays for Morwell and Moe get the nodSpecial pram parking bays are to be created in the Morwell and Moe CBD By Latrobe City Council - 21st May 2001 - Back to News Special pram parking bays are to be created in the Morwell and Moe CBD following a successful month-long trial in Franklin Street Traralgon. The new pram bays which should be created by the end of the week, will be located outside of the ANZ Bank in Albert Street Moe, and outside Clints Crazy Bargains in Commercial Road Morwell.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the trial of special parking bays for parents and carers loading and unloading prams and pushers from their vehicles, had been a tremendous success, and had been warmly welcomed by users.
"By providing some extra wide bays in the CBD, parents and carers with babies and young children find the task of taking their children with them, shopping or visiting services, so much easier and far less stressful," Cr Jenkins said.
"Normal parking bay widths pose problems for parents and carers with young families, particularly where one or more children needs a pram or pusher. These extra wide bays solve that problem, allowing users to place a pram next to a vehicle in safety because of the additional room provided," Cr Jenkins explained.
"These family parking bays are for the exclusive use of vehicles where a pram or pusher for accompanying children is to be off-loaded or loaded into a vehicle. A time limit of one hour applies, which is the same as the time limit imposed on adjacent normal sized bays," Cr Jenkins said.
"As with loading zones and disabled parking bays, it is an offence for these bays to be used by those people not entitled to use them. The family bays will be clearly marked on adjacent signs, and on the road surface.
"Our Local Laws Officers have been monitoring use of the trial pram bays in Traralgon, and we have generally been very pleased with citizen response in ensuring these bays are left for citizens who qualify. However, we will continue to monitor use of the Traralgon and the new Moe and Morwell pram bays to ensure they are appropriately used," Cr Jenkins said.
Traralgon resident, and mother of eight-week old Ryan, Roslyn Noon, said the parking bays had been a boon when she went shopping.
"I’ve been using the new pram bays in Franklin Street quite often, and think they’re terrific. I need room to set up Ryan’s pram next to the car and the extra wide space gives me plenty of room to manoeuvre, without worrying about another car trying to squeeze me out of the way," Ms Noon said.
Councillor Jenkins added that the provision of family parking bays was a further step towards providing better and fairer access for all citizens throughout the community.
"There are a number of initiatives which Council has taken on board, such as a baby changing facility in Morwell’s CBD, a review of the service we deliver through our Maternal and Child Health Centres, and the provision of these pram bays to ensure the needs of today’s families are being met," Cr Jenkins concluded.
