Program Results Emphasise Need For Aerial Baiting

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis has again called on the Bracks Government to implement aerial baiting of wild dogs, in light of results from recent baiting programs in the Benambra region.

Mr Davis told Parliament yesterday that a Parks Victoria six week targeted ground baiting program had shown a large number of wild dogs are still devastating the region.

"In the Benambra region, baits were taken by 50 dogs alone," Mr Davis said.

"This would indicate very clearly the large number of dogs that are not just preying on farm animals and intimidating people in rural communities but are also preying on native wildlife.

"The New South Wales Government has recently completed a series of aerial baiting trials that were conducted over several years to determine finally whether or not the native tiger quoll, which was the species thought most likely to be at risk from non-target baits, would be endangered.

"The result of the trial work has confirmed what earlier experience had taught – that is, there is no risk to the quoll."

Mr Davis told the Parliament that the Bracks Government had stalled for too long on this issue and for the sake of the farmers and slaughtered livestock, had to take action to introduce aerial baiting.

"I urge the government to adopt the policy position that has long been advocated by the Liberal Party, which is to introduce an aerial baiting program for wild dog control," he said.

"This must be done as soon as possible."

Mr Davis said this was not the time for procrastination, farmers were losing millions of dollars because the Bracks Government refused to take real action to eradicate wild dogs from Crown Land.
