Pedestrian Bridge Over Traralgon Creek Temporarily Closed

The pedestrian suspension bridge over the Traralgon Creek near the tennis courts at the end of Davidson Street, leading to the Agnes Brereton Reserve, Traralgon has been temporarily closed.

Latrobe City‘s general manager built and natural environment sustainability, Peter Quigley, said that a planned inspection identified an upper cross member supporting the suspension cables was failing, putting pressure on the end of one of the eastern supports leading to some splitting of the support post.

"To ensure the community is not put at risk, a temporary closure has been put into effect," Mr Quigley said.

"This bridge is nearing the end of its design life and was due to be considered for replacement in the next few years. The design of suspension bridges, while strong, makes the replacement of major components difficult without dismantling the entire bridge," Mr Quigley explained.

"There are several options available for the bridge and these options are currently being evaluated," Mr Quigley added.

Pedestrians are requested to detour via the Franklin Street Bridge during the period of temporary closure.
