Significant LCP construction Work to See Partial Closure of Church Street

Construction of the 24 metres fly-tower starts June 29.

Work on the Latrobe Creative Precinct is about to ascend to new heights with the construction of the fly-tower that will rise to 24 metres. This building abuts the footpath, and as a consequence, the northbound lane of Church Street, between Kay and Grey Street, is closing temporarily. The closure, from 29 June, is to allow for safe construction for the workers and the public, as well as for access of machinery crucial to safely construct the Latrobe Creative Precinct. The closure is likely to last for 12 months.

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Dan Clancey said that the closure was inconvenient but necessary.

"We appreciate that there will be some angst with the closure and that getting used to the detour might take a little time. However, we like to apply the old adage, ‘short-term pain for long-term gain.’ The construction of the Latrobe Creative Precinct is entering a critical phase with concrete pours, installation of the fly-tower and other visible milestones. This is an asset of regional significance for our community and it is progressing well for completion and opening next year," Cr Clancey said.

"The lane closure may cause traffic build-up during peak times such as school drop-off and pick-up, so we would ask drivers to be patient, considerate and seek an alternative route and parking spots where possible.

"To aid the flow of traffic in the area, we’re imposing a two-minute time limit during school zone speed reduction times at the drop-off and pick-up bays in Moore Street, Grey Street and the angle parking in Franklin Street, on the school block."

Latrobe City Council has worked with the school and businesses in the precinct to ensure they are across all aspects of the closure.

"Parking is still available on Church Street, accessed southbound towards Kay Street from Grey Street, and the closure will result in the loss of only a few car parks. However, we do advise that you plan ahead and leave extra time for your journey or appointment. Businesses are remaining open and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t continue to visit them during the closure," Cr Clancey said.

"We thank the community for their cooperation and patience during this time. There’s no way round the closure but there is a bright light on the horizon – and that’s the opening of what we hope will be seen as an iconic creative precinct that will be the envy of our region."
