Overnight works to improve water supply

Westernport Water crews will be working overnight December 4-5 and December 5-6, completing works to improve water supply on Phillip Island.

By Susan Webster - 20th November 2007 - Back to News

All residents of the island west of Boys Home Rd are asked to avoid using water from 10pm to 6am while works are underway.

The crews will be replacing eight air valves in the main supply main servicing the island. The works will take place from Boys Home Rd to Rhyll Rd.

Westernport Water Managing Director David Mawer said: "Our staff and contractors will be working overnight to reduce inconvenience to our customers. We apologise for any disruptions caused by this necessary maintenance work.

"We ask customers to avoid using water during the works, and this includes using all water appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines and toilet cisterns.

"Replacing the air valves will mean better reliability for the island’s water supply. It is part of the pro-active maintenance program underway at Westernport Water."

During the works there will be loss of pressure and, in some areas, a possible temporary loss of water.

The next day customers might notice a milky colour to their water. This is simply air in the water. It disappears when the water is allowed to settle for a while. The water is completely safe to drink.

Customers finding air in pipes after the works need simply to run an outdoor tap for a few minutes to get rid of the air.
