Street art – vandalism or raw, funky and clever? Maybe the answer depends on your age, but much like the many visitors to the vibrant laneways of Melbourne,

for the participants in the Creative Edge program at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, the energy and individuality that is expressed by street art, has a great deal of meaning and has certainly made an impression.

Latrobe City’s public programs officer, Nicole Brindley, said that the young people involved in the Term 1 program had studied a variety of street art and its meaning.

"Creative Edge is about allowing the participants to study a style and then apply it to their own work. They have enjoyed exploring the subculture of street art and, as teenagers, have identified immediately with its arrogance, its edginess, its secrecy and its rebellious nature.

"The participants have created their own street art in our studio workshop, giving their own unique stamp to their design. The bold colours, the striking designs, the feeling that they’ve poured into their artwork has been amazing to watch. They’ve allowed their creativity to flow through their work and the results have been edgy, fresh and dramatic," Ms Brindley said.

Here’s what some of the Creative Edge participants had to say:

"I think street art is a different way to express your feelings through art.

"I think street art is not like normal art, it means something to someone, like coming up with a name for you or a symbol for you."

"Street art is really fun to learn about and mess around with. There are so many different styles that you can have a go at, and looking at street art is great inspiration."

The Creative Edge participants are displaying their work in an exhibition Tagged@The Lane from 31 March until 17 June.

Tagged@The Lane will coincide with a huge exhibition of street art, The May’s Project, including work by international and national artists which will open at the Latrobe Regional Gallery on 28 April and continue until 24 June.
