"This is a good result for Baw Baw and shows our local economy continues to be strong," said Baw Baw Shire Chief Executive Officer John Dyer.

"Not only do we have the most positive figures in Gippsland but unemployment in Baw Baw is also well below Victorian and national averages."

Mr Dyer noted that while the latest figures showed a state increase in unemployment Baw Baw Shire was able to maintain stable employment figures.

"At 4%, our unemployment rate is little more than half the Gippsland average, 2.4% below country Victoria as a whole and 1.7% below the national average," said Mr Dyer.

"All the indications are that our local economy is continuing at a strong pace.

"Building applications in the Shire are likely to set a new record this year and virtually all our towns are growing."

Mr Dyer said that Baw Baw Shire was comparatively fortunate to be faced with the problem of how to manage increasing growth.

"Next year will see the finalisation of a number of growth management strategies and infrastructure development plans for Baw Baw," said Mr Dyer.

The unemployment figures were released in the latest Small Area Labour Market statistics from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
