Travelling Public Advised To Take Note Of Road Closures

Police have requested that travellers wishing to use Gippsland’s Alpine roads familiarise themselves with road closures, speed restrictions and condition of the roads before leaving home

By DSE/CFA - 17th February 2003 - Back to News

Police have requested that travellers wishing to use Gippsland’s Alpine roads familiarise themselves with road closures, speed restrictions and condition of the roads before leaving home.

The Alpine area is not open to tourists, as emergency vehicles need unhindered use of roads, and road conditions may not be safe for use by the general public.

Senior Constable Peter Andrews of Briagolong police has advised that some roads in the Dargo area have been closed or restrictions placed on their use.

"The danger to members of the public is still current and road closures are still in force in the fire area," Senior Constable Andrews said.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment and the CFA also advise that driving conditions can alter quickly with wind direction changes, bringing in dense smoke from fire areas.

If faced with the above conditions, "U turn to safety". If caught in fire stop on a bare area off the bitumen, turn on the lights, get down below window level and cover yourself, preferably with a woollen blanket until the fire front passes.

For further information please contact the Victoria Police Emergency Information line on 1800 444 343.

For more information about the fire situation and how it might affect you and to report stock losses, please call the Gippsland Community Fire Information line on 1800 668 066.
