ETS Modelling A MustThe Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has mounted pressure on the Brumby Government to undertake vital modelling in relation to emissions trading. By Russell Northe - 7th May 2009 - Back to News Speaking in Parliament this week, Mr Northe said there was strong concern from the local business sector and wider community that jobs would be lost as a consequence of Rudd’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).
Further to the Prime Minister’s decision to delay its implementation by twelve months, Mr Northe said the Brumby Government must commit to thoroughly investigating the impacts of such a scheme on the Latrobe community and economy.
"It is imperative the Brumby Government undertakes an inquiry with extensive community and business consultation to understand the real impacts of an emissions trading scheme and provide some certainty for the Latrobe Valley," Mr Northe told the House.
"It is extremely difficult for businesses to implement plans and strategies for the future when the impacts of a scheme such as this are not understood."
Mr Northe said the state government was placing blind faith in the Rudd government to ‘do the right thing’ by our region without bothering to do their own homework.
"The faith this government has bestowed in the Rudd government to get this right beggars belief, particularly when you have the Energy Minister just last week stating the introduction of a CPRS must not be delayed and the Prime Minister doing exactly that 4 days later.
"Cleary the communication is not as strong as it needs to be on such an important matter.
"External modelling has indicated that Gippsland’s economy would shrink by 20 percent following the introduction of Labor’s ETS," Mr Northe said.
"The Brumby Government must commit to undertaking its own study immediately so that we in the Latrobe Valley may fully understand the implications of Labor’s planned scheme on our future."
