Over the past two years the crime in our area diminished considerably due to the efforts of the police and residents. In order to maintain this desirable situation residents are asked to remain vigilant and report any unusual activity they may see in the area. To report anything dial 000 (triple zero) and ask the operator for the police. The police never divulge their source of information.
Congratulations to our Area Manager, Carmen Cook, for being awarded the Latrobe City "Citizen Of The Year" award. This special award is well deserved. Well Done Carmen!
Downlights:
Halogen downlights can be a fire risk if they are poorly installed. The number of house fires caused by wrongly fitted halogen downlights is on the increase, according recent figures released by the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade. In Melbourne alone, 57 examples have been recorded in the last 18 months, causing millions of dollars damage.
Halogen downlights can heat up to 370o C. The lights become a hazard when they come into contact with roof insulation. Any house that is using downlights could have this hazard, depending on the sort of insulation used in the roof space.
The blaze started by downlights tends to spread rapidly within roof cavities, often undetected by fire alarms. Crucial minutes are lost before residents are aware of the danger.
Regulations are in place to ensure electricians install the lights properly, trouble may arise when people buy do-it-yourself-kits and attempt to install them without consulting a qualified electrician. If you have downlights, check that there is a clear gap between the lights and the insulation. When you doubt that existing downlights have been installed correctly, get a qualified electrician to check them.
Travelling Overseas:
If you are taking prescription medicines with you overseas, there may be some things you need to organize before you go. According to Medicare, it’s illegal to take PBS subsidised medicines out of Australia, unless they are for your personal use, or for someone travelling with you.
To be on the safe side, this is what the government advises doing before you go.
1. Get your doctor to write a letter explaining that your medication is for your personal use, and what it is and how much you are taking.
2. Check with the embassy of the country that you are going to, that the medicines are legal there.
3. Leave your medicines in their original packaging.
