Victorian Youth Week

Victoria’s largest youth event has arrived in Wellington.

By Wellington Shire Council - 21st August 2003 - Back to News

It’s Victorian Youth Week and Wellington Shire Council is working in partnership with the local community to organise a range of activities "run by young people for young people" to celebrate youth week.

Chief Executive Lyndon Webb said the participation of youth in organising the events empowered young people, providing a sense of ownership.

"Victorian Youth Week involves more than 200,00 young Victorians and enables youth to have a voice within their community," he said

"Here at Wellington we recognise how important it is for youth to have a voice, and sense of belonging within our community.

"We take pride in the way we strive to include their views and inputs in our decision-making namely through the Wellington Shire Youth Committee "SHOUT", which acts as a Council/community consultative body.

"SHOUT is a committee of young people aged 12 to 24 years which encourages leadership development and involvement in community volunteer projects.

"We also employ a Youth Development Officer to support young people and youth providers.

"Youth Week provides us with a further opportunity to showcase our youth, and increase awareness of youth issues within our local community."
