Australian ceramics explored at the GalleryCharacteristics and themes in Australian pottery are explored in the latest exhibition on display at the Latrobe Regional Gallery. By Latrobe Shire Council - 11th August 2004 - Back to News ‘The Brown Pot Show’ features the works of a wide variety of Australian ceramic artists and demonstrates the fascination with clay that was felt by many potters of the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that the word ‘brown’ appropriately describes the craft movement in Australia, particularly in the 1970’s, during which time there was a strong need to identify and express an Australian identity.
"The colour brown conjures an image of something rich, earthy, nourishing, capable of generating life and sustaining growth. The wide brown land is explored both in the materials used, as well as the forms the ceramic works took, during the seventies and eighties. Australian pottery certainly has a characteristic of its own, and it has been dramatically influenced by the country’s red earth, Gum trees, hot sun and the other colours and flavours of the Australian landscape," Ms Tegart said.
"The period of ceramics explored in this exhibition is viewed nostalgically by some and shunned by others, however it is noteworthy for its demonstration of the possibilities and opportunities that were available to the fledgling world of Australian potters at the time. Many of the artists featured in this exhibition have provided the model and stimulus for subsequent artists and set the standards for an individuality and expression that continues to influence Australian ceramics today, hence it is significant that many of these artists are still working," Ms Tegart concluded.
‘The Brown Pot Show’ is on display at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 10 October. Works included in the exhibition are drawn from the Latrobe Regional Gallery collection.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
