Insurance Companies Should Follow Racv LeadEastern Region MP Peter Hall has called on other insurance companies to follow the lead of the RACV, which this week announced it would cover all claims for members whose cars or homes were damaged as a result of last week’s storms. By Peter Hall - 6th July 2007 - Back to News Mr Hall said there had been a great deal of confusion for people whose properties were affected by the storms and consequent floods, with many still up in the air about their insurance cover.
"I congratulate the RACV on its commitment to cover all claims by its members and not try to duckshove some of the claims into the grey areas of storm versus flood damage," Mr Hall said.
"The people of this region are suffering, many having been through fire or drought, or both, as well as now facing up to the floods. They deserve assistance, especially if it is assistance that they have been paying for through insurance premiums.
"I hope other insurance companies follow the lead of the RACV and honour the claims of people who have been legitimately affected by what has been a disastrous year."
Mr Hall added that for people who believed they were not receiving appropriate support from their insurance company, there is an Insurance Ombudsman who may be able to act on their behalf.
"The Insurance Ombudsman Service is an independent organisation approved by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission," Mr Hall said. "It is a free service and is available to consumers who hold a general insurance policy with a participating company.
"While an approach to the Insurance Ombudsman Service is not a guarantee of a positive result, it is an independent service that some people may be able to access to assist them in claim disputes."
The Insurance Ombudsman Service is based in Melbourne and can be contacted on telephone 1300 78 08 08, and also has a website, www.insuranceombudsman.com.au
