Young People In Boolarra To Get Equipped Member for Morwell Russell Northe joined with Member for Eastern Region Danny O’Brien to announce that young people in Boolarra and the wider district will be geared up and supported to get involved in their local community, By Russell Northe - 30th July 2014 - Back to News thanks to $5,000 in Victorian Coalition Government funding.
Mr Northe congratulated the Boolarra and District Youth Group on its Opt to be: Social and practical skills for rural youth project.
"Through Equip, Opt to be: Social and practical skills for rural youth will provide social and practical knowledge, skills and experiences for rural youth in the Boolarra and extended district, Mr Northe said.
"Young adults often don’t have opportunities to participate in social and recreational activities due to circumstances such as parental unemployment, economic disadvantage, drug and alcohol misuse, and the lack of transport, access to recreational activities and social experiences. This project would provide that chance.
"The Boolarra and District Youth Group will receive $5,000 to purchase sports equipment, camping equipment, camera and video player," Mr Northe said.
"I look forward to seeing the results from this fantastic initiative in the Boolarra community."
Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith said the Coalition Government’s $67,000 Equip Grant Program, had boosted 16 local councils and organisations in rural and regional Victoria.
"The Napthine Government is committed to making it easier for young people in Victoria’s rural and regional areas to connect to their communities, share their experiences and have their voices heard," Mr Smith said.
"An essential part of achieving this is making sure that our young people have access the right tools and resources."
The Equip Grant Program is administered by the Victorian Rural Youth Services initiative (VRYS), part of the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVic).
Equip is part of the Coalition Government’s $3.2 million Shape It! strategy which supports young people in rural and regional Victoria to participate in local decision making.
