Life wasn’t meant to be greasy: Westernport Water

WESTERNPORT Water is offering local food businesses regular, cost-effective grease trap inspections and pump-outs as part of an upgraded maintenance program.

By Susan Webster - 12th November 2007 - Back to News

As the number of restaurants, cafes and other eateries increases across the region, the corporation has started inspecting selected sites three times a year.

Neil Waters, Westernport Water’s Technical Officer, Projects and Systems, said: "We are hoping to pinpoint any problems before they become major headaches.

"We control the pump-outs of grease-traps and we inspect for any damage and save the business operators the hassle – not to mention the high cost – if their grease trap causes a drain blockage."

The customer list numbers 110 and is growing, Neil added. Pubs, cafes, restaurants, motels and laundries are on the Tradewaste register.

He explained that the Westernport Water service is cost-effective for the customer because several properties can be done in batches, unlike a single pump-out charge.

"It’s cheaper for them and it’s better for our system," Neil said. "The costs are shared between all the customers so it’s cheaper, and it helps avoid our wastewater system getting any spills of fats or greasy wastes."

The routine inspections and pump-outs are worked out in conjunction with the individual businesses and are also timed just before peak demand – the pre-Christmas visit is due soon, and will be followed by another pre-Easter.

To sign-up for the service, contact Neil Waters on 5956 4186 or Arthur Allen 5956 4165
