Young musos wanted for Latrobe City Band

Latrobe City Council has officially invited applications from young musicians within the municipality to join the new Latrobe City Youth Band, which will perform in Council’s Sister Cities, Takasago and Taizhou, in April 2003.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said Council has embraced this youth-focused proposal, recognising that the tour would not only include both of Latrobe’s Sister City nations, but would also give the City’s youth the opportunity to take part in a cultural and artistic experience.

"The band tour will strengthen our relationship with both of our Sister Cities and in particular Taizhou City, as it will be a reciprocal visit to the visit in August last year by the Taizhou Children’s Performing Arts delegation".

Cr Jenkins emphasised that even though the band concept was originally developed by Council under its International Relations program, Council regarded the formation of a Latrobe City Youth Band to be of great benefit to the community in its own right.

"The band will bring together youths from diverse backgrounds across the municipality with a common interest in music, and give them the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their musical and personal skills through active participation in rehearsals, performances and structured lessons," Cr Jenkins said.

"The community will benefit from its involvement in the establishment of the band and through the band’s performances; and Council, as the Youth Band’s sponsor, will be able to engage the band to promote our municipality and for City functions".

Cr Jenkins said Council and the International Relations Committee will seek corporate sponsorship to assist Council to finance the project and the Youth Band will undertake fundraising activities, with an emphasis on a series of concerts throughout the municipality.

"As with Council’s Student Visit Program to Takasago, any shortfall in the cost of the tour is to be met by the participating youth’s families. Council will commit the $10,000 normally used for the annual student exchange programs towards the Band, as there will be no other student exchanges in 2002/2003. In addition, to ensure that this opportunity is available to all eligible youth within our municipality, Council will sponsor up to five youth participants who meet the eligibility criteria for the cost of their airfares and accommodation expenses," Cr Jenkins announced.

"This is just a wonderful opportunity for the young people of our municipality. I think it will prove to be one of the best youth initiatives developed in the City," Cr Jenkins added.

The Band will be lead by David Williams as Musical Director and Lyndal Chambers as Assistant Musical Director. "We are extremely fortunate to have two highly talented and motivated musicians in David and Lyndal to run the band. I know they will do an excellent job, and will make everyone proud of the Latrobe City Youth Band." Cr Jenkins concluded.
