Server meets small business needsSmall business servers deliver technology benefits for SMBs By Lynda Bertoli - 19th June 2007 - Back to News Small businesses have many of the same technology needs as their larger counterparts but on a smaller scale.
Whether a business has two or 200 workstations, they need to be linked, or networked, via a server, to optimise business operations. A server is a specialised computer dedicated to managing shared resources, controlling access to files and data, and access to devices such as printers, fax machines and other computers.
The Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (SBS 2003) is usually the first choice of server for growing businesses as it has been specifically developed to provide many of the networking features used by larger organisations but without the complexity typically associated with server technology. It has been designed specifically with small business in mind and can handle between two and 75 workstations.
Sage Technology, a Microsoft Certified Partner, is well aware of the issues that lead business owners to implement server technology.
Lead Engineer at Sage, Ian Bennett, said businesses which were concerned about the security of their IT systems, wanted to share their files, printers and faxes, and who wanted to protect their critical business information from system crashes and data loss could benefit from SBS 2003.
"Protecting critical business information is non-negotiable," Mr Bennett said, "And SBS 2003 has proven itself time and again in that regard."
Sage Technology has completed about 30 SBS 2003 installations for clients in a range of fields including real estate agencies, lawyers, accountants, medical practices, not for profit and religious organisations, engineering companies and at light industrial sites.
Among the benefits that small businesses gain by using SBS 2003 are a reliable technology foundation and a dependable working environment because the server:
· Automatically backs up files to the server and protects business data;
· Easily retrieves and restores data which has been accidentally deleted;
· Locks out known spammers and removes dangerous email attachments;
· Has a built-in firewall to protect against unauthorised users; and
· Enables secure remote access.
"Remote access means that managers and employees can access important business information from any computer with an internet connection," Mr Bennett said, "This means that people can securely access their personal office desktop as well as all of the shared information and resources maintained in their server’s centralised database.
"They can access email, schedules and contacts, effectively allowing them to do business wherever they have an internet connection."
SBS 2003 also offers many of these remote access features via Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC Phone Editions and Smartphones.
Mr Bennett said SBS 2003 was wizard-driven which made it easier for IT professionals to set up and manage. It comes with a range of Microsoft technologies such as Exchange Server, Office Outlook and Shared Fax Service, which made it quite economical when compared to buying the various components separately.
