Backyard Burning Ban ReminderBass Coast local laws officers are reminding residents that burning off without a permit in residential areas is banned By Bass Coast Shire Council - 7th January 2002 - Back to News Bass Coast local laws officers are reminding residents that burning off without a permit in residential areas is banned throughout the Shire.
"Burning off in residential areas can be annoying to neighbours due to the smoke and smell," said Kaye Hall, Senior Local Laws Officer with Bass Coast Shire Council. "Often any kind of rubbish lying around a property is put onto a fire, creating an unpleasant smell or smoke that affects neighbours."
Kaye said that Council had received several calls over the past month from local residents complaining about neighbours burning off.
"In one particular instance, the fire very nearly got out of control and could have tragic consequences for nearby residents," said Kaye. "People sometimes don’t understand how quickly things can burn or how the direction and speed of the wind can change."
Katie Moon, Waste Management/Environment Officer at Council, said that people should put their waste in their kerbside collection bin or deposit any waste, including greenwaste, at Council’s waste transfer stations.
"Recyclables can be deposited free of charge at the waste transfer stations," said Katie. "The waste transfer stations are operating as per usual over the festive season except for Christmas Day when they are closed."
For more information about Waste Transfer Station and Landfill opening hours, contact Council on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311, or check Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au
