GippsTAFE Enjoys "Well Being at Work"GippsTAFE recently held its annual staff conference day, the theme for the conference was "Well Being at Work." By Gippsland TAFE - 2nd June 2003 - Back to News Keynote Speaker for the Conference was Doctor John Lang, who has been talking about health for over a decade and has worked with many large organisations throughout Australia, including IBM and AMP.
The theme of Dr Lang’s Keynote address was "MASTering Life." Interspersed with humour Dr Lang presented an extremely interesting presentation that provided the audience with some very though provoking issues.
Dr Lang clearly articulated why each and every one of us should spend more time looking after our health.
In his presentation, Dr Lang introduced the staff to "The Wheel of Life." The Wheel of Life shows that a number of factors determine our very being.
Our individual make up is determined by things such as work, mind, body, values and beliefs, learning, finances, social and family, and that if one of them topples, then it affects all of the others. The key is to strike a balance between all of these important factors.
Dr Lang explained that the four pillars to good health were to eat fruit and vegetables, exercise, manage stress and not to smoke. At least 63 per cent of Australians fail to exercise sufficiently and 62 per cent are either overweight or obese. In a 1986 Better Health Commission Report, nearly 31 per cent of respondents cited that they were too lazy when asked why they don’t eat better.
When applying the concept of MASTering Life Management, Dr Lang suggested that we consider four questions. What do I value most and what do I want from my life? How well am I performing according to my values? What planning and goal setting and actions must I undertake in order to achieve my mission? How can I problem solve along the way using my internal and external resources?
Following the keynote presentation 22 different workshops comprising of information giving or active participation were available to staff. Some of the topics covered were Swiss Ball, Funding Retirement, Shiatsu, Sleep, Stress Management, Tai Chi, and Men’s and Women’s Health.
In keeping with the theme of the day, lunch was based on the Health Heart Cookbook, various soups, sandwiches, frittatas, wraps and low fat deserts were on offer
