Drinking water fountains being rolled out across City
Latrobe City Council implements Tracks, Trails and Path Strategy.
Eleven drinking fountains will be installed across Latrobe City as part of the implementation of Latrobe City Council’s Tracks, Trails and Path Strategy. Funding of $50,000 from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), through the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone, was used for the project.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the fountains would be particularly useful during the summer months when high temperatures and heat waves could have negative health effects.
"The fountains will be installed at locations across the municipality with high pedestrian traffic.
"We urge every community member to take advantage of these terrific assets and to fill a water bottle or simply sip water when passing buy.
"Water flushes the human system, keeps our minds healthy, regulates body temperature, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells and keeps our bodies energised. As a community we need to drink more water, more often and that’s what we hope to support with the installation of these water fountains. We’ve already seen some hot days, yet we still have more hot weather ahead of us."
"This initiative is also in perfect alignment with Council’s Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, Living Well Latrobe, adopted in October.
"It responds to feedback that says that the community wants improved access to drinking fountains while using our open spaces and recreation assets."
The fountains are being installed until June 2018 at the following locations:
- Yinnar – Main St – Centenary Park
- Toongabbie – near picnic settings at shop
- Traralgon CBD - near Franklin St crossing
- Tyers – near play space/walking path
- Traralgon South – within recreation precinct – to be confirmed
- Moe Apex Park (replacement of existing)
- Traralgon – Newman Park (replacement of existing)
- Traralgon – Kay St shared path
- Morwell bus stop
- Traralgon – Rod Dunbar Park
- Churchill – near taxi shelter (replacement of existing)
