Wellington Green thumbs out in forceHundreds of green thumbs will be out in force across Wellington Shire this weekend, celebrating Planet Ark’s National Tree Day. By Wellington Shire Council - 29th July 2005 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council has provided more than 1000 indigenous plants plus tools for local people at Lake Guyatt for the event.
On Thursday, Wellington Mayor Peter Gault helped more than 140 students from Sale 545 Primary School to plant about 600 native trees and shrubs near the Lake. The event was sponsored by Dwyer Toyota, Sale.
Friday is the designated Schools Tree Day and a group of eager students from Sale Catholic College will visit Lake Guyatt to plant more than 100 trees and shrubs. The Council has also provided Dargo Primary School with about 50 indigenous plants, which students will plant at the school.
On Saturday, July 30, local girl guides and members of the community are planning to meet at Lake Guyatt to plant more than 500 indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses.
Wellington Mayor Peter Gault said: "The Council has been supporting National Tree Day for several years now and it’s great to see so many people, especially our youth, making such a positive impact on the environment."
Cr Gault said trees provided food and shelter for wildlife, offset pollution and helped combat serious problems such as salinity and erosion.
"Planting drought-resistant native trees in Wellington not only beautifies our area, but it also helps the environment and people obviously enjoyed participating in the events."
Tree planting events are also planned at Maffra, Bundalaguah, Meerlieu, Longford and East Sale this weekend.
Nationally Tree Day is on July 31 this year, although celebrations will be held on several days either side of the official date. It is estimated more than 250,000 volunteers will plant more than 1 million native trees at more than 3,200 sites across Australia during the weekend. More than 7.5 million trees and shrubs have been planted since the event began a decade ago.
