The Port of Sale is the historical centre of the Sale Township. The port is located at the northern end of a man-made canal which connected water transport between Gippsland and Melbourne in the pioneering days.
Stage 1 of the major redevelopment of the Port of Sale was implemented to create a recreation and tourist destination that has overcome a number of challenges and obstacles. The result has been the creation of a popular destination for visitors and the local community with quality design outcomes and high level visual and open space amenity.
The Port of Sale redevelopment helps promote the precinct and is displayed on nearby signage and flags lining the port area, providing a colourful and exciting entry to the precinct.
Winners were selected based on the commercial viability and public utility of their entry and demonstrated an outstanding level of relevance and contribution to the community.
Engineers Australia, Victorian State Chairman, Mr Agnelo Duarte said "The Awards recognise those who set new standards in the engineering profession and marshal science to develop new services. It is part of a larger scale campaign by Engineers Australia, Victorian Division to increase the awareness across the community of the crucial role engineers play in enhancing our lives in remarkable ways."
The Overall Engineering Excellence Award presented by Engineers Australia, Victorian Division was awarded to John Holland Pty Ltd, Melbourne Water, GHD Pty Ltd for the Palmer Street Main Drain Diversion Project, which represents the epitome of engineering excellence in 2005.
