Proposed Budget On Exhibition For The Bass Coast CommunityThe budget includes $7.3 million worth of capital expenditure By Bass Coast Shire Council - 23rd July 2002 - Back to News The proposed 2002/03 budget went before Council at last night’s Council meeting. The budget includes $7.3 million worth of capital expenditure.
"There are some very exciting new capital work projects in the budget," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.
The Cape Paterson First Surf Beach car park will be resurfaced and landscaped. Landscaping also undertaken on the Smith’s Beach carpark.
Bicycle paths will be constructed beside the Phillip Island Tourist Road from Cape Woolamai to Surf Beach and from Bermaui Crescent to the Rhyll-Newhaven Road. A shared pedestrian and bicycle path will also be constructed beside White Road in Wonthaggi from Wentworth Road to McKenzie road.
Two bridges will be constructed on Pinkerton Road, West Creek. This will allow an increase in the load limit for vehicles such as milk trucks accessing this road.
A new playing surface and basic water reticulation will be installed at the Newhaven Recreation Reserve. The Wonthaggi Netball Courts surfaces will be upgraded to increase safety.
Planning for the upgrades to the Wonthaggi township entrances will also be undertaken as per the Wonthaggi Urban Design Framework strategy.
Parking and appearance of Wonthaggi’s civic spine will be improved. Parking will also be improved along Baillieu Street and Hagelthorn Street in Wonthaggi to cope with demands from the library project and Bi-Lo project.
The San Remo pre-school is to be relocated to a more suitable site. The new facility will include a community room and adult education facilities.

"These are only some of the capital works project in the budget," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council. "I encourage people to have a look at what is included in the budget and they are also welcome to make submissions."

Council has been committed to reducing debt regularly. In 2002/03, Council will reduce the current debt of $6,900,786 by $1,009,648. Council will borrow $500,000 to finance capital works.
Members of the public can view the proposed budget at any of Council’s Customer Service Centres. Submissions are invited until Tuesday 6 August 2002. Submissions will be heard on 7 August. The Council will again consider the Budget at the Council meeting on Wednesday 7 August.
