Bogong high plains road sealing welcomedThe Federal Government’s announcement that it will spend $2 million to seal the Bogong High Plains road between Falls Creek and the Omeo Highway was "most welcome news," East Gippsland Shire CEO Steve Kozlowski said today. By East Gippsland Shire Council - 12th October 2005 - Back to News "The $6.5 million project can now proceed based on joint financial contributions from the State and Federal Governments, the East Gippsland and Alpine Shires and other local organisations."
"It will have a tremendous effect on tourism and the local economies," he said.
Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell made the announcement this week adding that a further $3 million would be spent on weed control.
Mr Kozlowski said the announcement follows recent representation made to the Minister by the East Gippsland and Alpine Shires.
"At the time we stressed the importance of sealing the road on the basis of safety as well as the economic gain through additional tourism."
Mr Kozlowski said the result also showed the value of rural shire’s working together to achieve regional outcomes. "Both shires stand to gain considerably from this development and we now look forward to the process of sealing the road getting under way."
