David Schwarz Talks Problem GamblingFormer AFL star and media personality David Schwarz recently visited Bass Coast to talk about his lifelong struggle with gambling addiction. By Bass Coast - 22nd May 2012 - Back to News Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire Councils joined forces to bring David to Wonthaggi to launch Responsible Gambling Awareness Week. Community Strengthening Manager, Antoinette Mitchell, said David revealed that he started gambling as a teenager just before being drafted to the Melbourne Football Club.
"With the big money he was earning as a high profile footballer he was soon living a rollercoaster lifestyle involving huge wins and massive loses.
"He estimates he lost in excess of four million dollars over the years, including several houses, cars and other assets.
"He also lost many friends and family members along the way," said Mrs Mitchell.
"Seeking help early can definitely prevent devastating consequences such as family breakdown, financial ruin, and a rapid decline in mental health and wellbeing of all concerned."
David Schwarz said "resisting the temptation to punt is a battle every single day because I’m an addict."
With the support of his partner Karen, he has his addiction under control and has not gambled for over seven years. David reinforced the message from this year’s Responsible Gambling Awareness Week campaign: Don’t let gambling take over your life. That is exactly what happened to David … it took over his life and very nearly destroyed him and those he loved. He encouraged everyone present to be alert to the warning signs of problem gambling.
