Cutting Comments at Gallery‘Cutting Comments: Contemporary Linocuts 1995 – 1998’ is a touring exhibition of innovative and unconventional linocut prints by Australian contemporary artists that opened at the Latrobe Regional Gallery on Friday. By Latrobe City Council - 11th June 2003 - Back to News According to Latrobe Regional Gallery Curator, Vanessa McRae, The exhibition highlights new ideas using unusual materials to showcase a shift in Australian printmaking. "The artists have expanded traditional themes and techniques and explored new directions, in some cases presenting the prints as three-dimensional objects and as artist's books," Ms McRae said.
All of the prints are from the collection of the Silk Cut Foundation based in Melbourne. Every two years the Silk Cut Foundation holds the Silk Cut Award for Linocut Prints. Silk Cut is a type of linoleum especially made for linocut printing.
Dianne Waite, the coordinator of the award and curator of this exhibition said the Silk Cut Award had been instrumental in forging new directions in Australian printmaking.
Ms McRae said the title ‘Cutting Comments’ relates to the content of the exhibition, which provides a window to reflect on social, political and environmental concerns during the 1990’s. "Included in the exhibition is a youth section, which presents the work of young artists, aged between eight and eighteen, who are experimenting with linocut printing," Ms McRae explained.
This exhibition which continues until Sunday 29 June, is drawn from the collection of Duroloid Pty Ltd, sponsors of the Silk Cut Award. The national tour is developed and managed by National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria with assistance from The Gordon Darling Foundation.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays.
