East Gippsland Shire Council's updated Hardship Policy offers flexible plans and waivers, focusing on fairness and staff support
East Gippsland Shire Council has updated its Hardship Policy to support struggling ratepayers with flexible payment plans, deferrals, and waivers. Adopted on August 27, the policy emphasises fairness and staff training.
East Gippsland Shire Council has voted to increase assistance to community members who are facing financial difficulties. At the 27 August Council Meeting, councillors unanimously adopted an updated Hardship Policy, which is designed to provide a clearer, more accessible framework for ratepayers who are struggling to manage the payment of rates and charges in the current economic climate. Councillors noted the increasing pressure on households due to the rising cost of living.

Updated Hardship Policy
Mayor Cr Tom Crook emphasised the importance of fairness in the new approach. "This policy ensures all ratepayers, no matter their circumstances, are treated with dignity and respect. We want people to know that if they are struggling, we're here to help," he said.
The new Hardship Policy provides several avenues for assistance:
- Flexible payment plans tailored to individual needs, allowing smaller payments over a longer period, without interest
- Options for deferral of rates and charges until a future date, when paying the rates will be more manageable
- Waiver of rates and charges for those facing financial hardship
- Simple and straightforward application process
"We understand that seeking help can be difficult, but we've made every effort to simplify the process. Our customer service teams can help you with most questions about your payment options," Cr Crook said.
Rates support available
The rates team will also be heading to Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Omeo, Orbost and Paynesville in September, providing more opportunities for ratepayers to get direct assistance. Our commitment is to work with the community to deliver the more than 100 essential services to East Gippslanders while using our budget prudently."
Council has updated its website with clear information about the support available and council officers will undergo training to better understand the challenges faced by those in financial distress. "We are committed to providing support to our ratepayers who are experiencing payment difficulties. By working together, we can find solutions that support our ratepayers," Cr Crook said.
