Danny O'Brien calls on Labor government to take action on the worsened Lake Victoria foreshore erosion

Heavy winds and high tides have worsened erosion on Lake Victoria foreshore in Loch Sport. Nationals MP Danny O'Brien criticises the Allan Labor government's delays in implementing effective prevention measures.

Heavy winds and high tides in the past week have accelerated the already problematic erosion on Lake Victoria foreshore in Loch Sport. The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien said the significant damage that occurred in such a short period highlights the importance of securing immediate prevention measures from the Allan Labor government.

The government's delay in addressing erosion has damaged the boat ramp and walking tracks, endangering homes. Unimplemented groynes reveal the Allan Labor government's failure

Delayed erosion solutions

Mr O'Brien said, "After 10 years of expensive, time-consuming reports and consultations and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent moving walking tracks - which are again waiting to be relocated - it's a hard pill to swallow that we are still waiting for preventative action."

"While I continue to raise this matter and write to the Minister for Environment to seek answers on when we can expect to see more than lip service, the erosion continues to threaten local infrastructure. The Allan Labor government must move on from 'considering the issue' to actually implementing solutions to arrest the ongoing erosion," he said.

Erosion affects infrastructure

As a result of the advanced erosion, Wellington Shire Council recently announced the temporary closure of Seagull Drive Boat Ramp. "While the government continues to delay action to prevent further damage, erosion is eating away at the boat ramp car park and walking tracks along the foreshore.

"The community and I have been told that the government is planning to install three new groynes in the Seagull Drive area, but so far it has still not amounted to anything. Without action, it is just a matter of time before private property and homes also come under threat. It is clear that the Allan Labor government can't manage money, can't manage erosion prevention and Gippsland communities are paying the price,"
