Liberals Invest In Recreational Hunting

A Liberal Government would better manage Victoria’s game species and habitats, improve firearm safety and ensure the continuation of the traditional duck season

By Parliament of Victoria - 14th November 2006 - Back to News

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

The Liberal Party is the only party that has committed to the future of recreational hunting in Victoria, Mr Davis said.

"The Bracks Labor Government has plans to abolish the traditional duck season in 2007 and The Greens have vowed to ban recreational hunting all-together," Mr Davis said.

"Labor has done a preference deal with The Greens to deliver The Greens the balance of power in the Upper House. If Labor is re-elected, will Labor implement The Greens policy to ban all recreational hunting in Victoria?"

After seven years, the Bracks Government has now made election promises 14 days out from the poll which simply cannot be believed, he said.

In contrast, the Liberal Party has always supported hunting and shooting organisations and announced significant initiatives which will benefit the hunting and shooting community earlier this year.

Mr Davis said the Liberal Party had committed to support hunters and will dedicate all revenue from hunting licence fees for conservation and game management purposes.

"We will establish a statutory Game Council to develop and oversee the implementation of strategic plans to secure hunting in Victoria on a sustainable basis," he said.

"A Liberal Government is 100% committed to retaining the traditional duck hunting season.

"We will cut red tape for hunters and fishers by implementing a new ‘Sporting Licence’ which will be a single card that will contain all details required to cover multiple shooting, fishing and hunting licences to simplify licencing arrangements.

"A Liberal Government will establish the Victorian Firearms Safety and Education Foundation (VFSEF) to promote firearm safety education and commit $720,000 over four years to its objectives.

"We will also establish the Victorian Firearms Safety and Education Scheme to be administered through the VFSEF, which will work to promote firearms safety among holders of firearms licences and the public.

The scheme will provide publications, videos and DVDs as general education tools, promoting firearm safety education.

"The role of the Firearms Consultative Committee will be enhanced, to become a Ministerial advisory committee. We have also committed $6 million for the introduction of a fox bounty, where farmers will benefit from shooters culling foxes on their properties, with a bounty of $10 per tail."

Mr Davis said the Liberal Party recognised the great contribution shooting organisations had made in protecting game habitat and a Liberal Government would provide additional support that has been lacking from Labor.

"At least 25 years before the advent of LandCare, hunters formed Field and Game Australia and commenced investing hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours into rehabilitating protected wetlands," he said.

"A Liberal Government will recognise and support the great conservation work undertaken by these volunteers so that recreational hunting can be enjoyed by future generations."
