Farmers Market A Success Despite Damp WeatherSaturday 20th December was the last Farmers Market before Christmas and the wet weather could not hold the crowds back. By Wellington Shire Council - 23rd December 2003 - Back to News Just under 1500 visitors attended the Wellington Farmers Market in a last minute rush to get the freshest, locally produced products for their festive season celebrations.
Paul Telfer from the Wellington Shire Council was thrilled that the weather had not deterred people and was impressed by the number of people that attended.
"We can expect to see more Gippsland wines and produce on the tables of Local Gippslanders on Christmas day celebrations.
"Some people struggled to walk out the gates with all their products, but it was an opposite story for the stall holders.
"At the end of the day the producers walked out the gates a lot lighter than when they walked in."
Many producers recorded a large increase in sales and the new stalls were extremely pleased with their takings for the day.
Liz Whitehall from The Wicked Wives is a stall holder who was astonished at the variety of products on offer at the market.
"We are extremely happy with the variety of products. It was a one stop shop for all your Christmas goodies.
"The Greenwattle Racecourse Sale provides us with the picturesque setting. It enables people to buy several different products at the one place.
"The venue works beautifully. It provides us with shelter from the rain and a canvas from the heat of the oncoming summer."
Fresh cherries, live poultry, vegetarian falafel wraps and scrumptious chicken burgers added to the number and variety of stalls at the market. The last market before Christmas recorded the largest number of stalls, so far.
The January Market is expected to be just as large and a little more noisy with live entertainment assured for Saturday 17th January 2004.
