Local scallop processing racket alleged

A month long investigation into the illegal possession and processing of scallops has just been completed by Fisheries Victoria Officers.

By Department of Primary Industries - 12th August 2005 - Back to News

It will be alleged that a Lakes Entrance man was receiving scallops without authority and subsequently processing them.

Fisheries Officers seized 367 scallop meats contained in airtight bags from two caravans in Lakes Entrance last week.

In addition two skippers have been formally interviewed about allegedly failing with conditions of their commercial fishing licenses.

Peter Simpson, Senior Fisheries Officer at Lakes Entrance, said these are serious matters.

"The financial penalties are quite severe and can include a period of imprisonment for serious breaches," Mr Simpson said.

" Fisheries Victoria is committed to ensuring that commercial operators comply with their licence conditions."

"The public expect that fish are handled and processed according to strict standards."

In the past twelve months three new Fisheries Officers have been appointed to the Lakes Entrance workstation.

Fisheries Officers are happy to hear from the community and discuss concerns they have about fishing in general.

Members of the public who observe any apparent illegal or suspicious fishing activity are reminded to call the 24 hour 13FISH (133 474) reporting line.
