A call to the fisheries offence reporting hotline 13FISH resulted in Fisheries Officers and Police Officers from Lakes Entrance intercepting a vehicle towing a boat in Lakes Entrance on Easter Monday morning.

It will be alleged that Fisheries Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and vessel and located 60 abalone meats concealed under the floor of the vessel.

Four dive tanks, two buoyancy vests, three wetsuits and other driving related equipment were also seized.

Peter Courtney, Gippsland Operations Manager for Fisheries Victoria said Fisheries Officers across Gippsland where out in force over the Easter period ensuring the prevention of the illegal possession and trafficking of abalone.

" People should avoid taking and possessing more than the total possession limit of 10 abalone as

they face heavy penalties and possible imprisonment."

"This result demonstrates that the 13FISH reporting hotline is working as more and more results are being achieved by an increase in the detection of Fisheries offences," Mr Courtney said.

Members of the public who observe any apparent illegal fishing activity are reminded to call 13FISH (13 4774) at any time of day seven days a week.
