Intergenerational Hub meeting generates positive responseMore than fifty people attended a workshop at the Churchill Hall last week as part of the ongoing consultation process and development of the Churchill Intergenerational Community Hub. By Latrobe City Council - 12th October 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City’s Executive Officer, Philip Marsh, explained that the Intergenerational Community Hub is a proposed complex for Churchill that will provide a single point of access to services such as maternal and child health centre, senior citizens centre, internet café, youth centre, library and other community meeting rooms.
"Tuesday’s meeting generated very favourable response and considerable feedback has been received following the meeting," Mr Marsh said.
"After a presentation outlining the Intergenerational Hub concept, which included the display of a number of plans and artist’s impressions of the proposed facility, the community was asked to provide feedback on whether it answered the needs of the community, and how, if at all, the proposal could be improved. Generally, the community believes the concept sound, and is now providing additional input with suggestions," Mr Marsh said.
"The Community Hub will draw people together of all ages and backgrounds, providing social, educational and recreational opportunities to those in Churchill and its surrounding districts.
"It’s designed to address the somewhat disjointed nature of the existing town providing both a visual link and seamless interface between the numerous elements that make up the Churchill community.
"The project will meet immediate and future community needs, providing the basic elements necessary to capture the potential contribution that having a modern university and a unique education precinct, working in partnership with the private sector and a whole of government approach, can have on the town’s future development," Mr Marsh explained.
"By working cooperatively together, the specialised components of the community will enhance service delivery, better target resource allocation, and assist in planning effectively for the future whilst making a positive contribution to community capacity building.
"The emphasis of the Churchill Intergenerational Community Hub is to use collaboration as a vehicle in building relationships to address existing and emerging problems that that are difficult to by one agency, organisation or group working alone.
"The underlying concept in developing the Churchill Intergenerational Community Hub is to provide a venue that brings agencies, organisations, individuals and members of the community together.
Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the project will make a positive contribution to the economic development capacity of Churchill.
"This will be achieved through integrating the town’s existing attributes, creating a synergy effect from the visual, physical and social linking of these elements so as to facilitate an environment of a robust, forward thinking, university town," Mr Buckley said.
"By providing a central focus for community information, the Churchill Intergenerational Community Hub will have the capacity to provide information and support for families and individuals to find and use other appropriate resources and agencies in the community.
"People of all ages and backgrounds will be able to access information and technology, local training and employment programs, social support programs, multilingual information and literacy programs. This will strengthen the family as a unit whilst developing a sense of community in the area.
