Melina Bath calls for safe driving and responsible camping over Australia Day weekend amid rising trauma, environmental concerns
Melina Bath urges safe driving and responsible camping over the Australia Day weekend, stressing care on roads and respect for the environment amid rising road trauma and recent camping site issues.
The Nationals' Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath is urging motorists to drive safely on the roads over the Australia Day weekend and for campers to act responsibly by observing regulations. "January has already seen Victoria record a 29.4 per cent increase in road traumas compared to last year, with the month and school holiday period yet to conclude."
Melina Bath anticipates busy roads in eastern Victoria's coastal and mountain areas, urging safe driving and responsible camping, including fire safety and rubbish removal
Safe and responsible travel
Ms Bath said, "The popular Australia Day weekend is often the last hurrah for the summer before children return to school and many parents return to work. It is a time to come together, celebrate our way of life and acknowledge our history."
Ms Bath said she expected our roads to be busiest around eastern Victoria's beautiful coastal and mountain towns as locals and visitors squeeze in their last days off for the summer. "When travelling on our roads, please take care, be patient and always drive to the conditions. If camping on public land, I ask you to do the right thing and observe fire warnings and advice, properly extinguish campfires and remove your rubbish."
"Everyone is keen to avoid a repeat of the disgraceful mess left in popular camping sites such Coopers Creek and Brunton's Bridge over Christmas and New Year. When enjoying our great outdoors visitors should take photos and only leave their footprints. It's important that our bush and beaches are respected and protected for the enjoyment of others for generations to come," said Ms Bath.
Reporting of problems in our state forests and National Park camping areas can be made to Parks Victoria on 13 1963 or email info@parks.vic.gov.au
