Morwell Teams Make State FinalsMorwell Tenpins teams travelled to Narre Warren to compete in the Goldpin Zone Final against Sale, Rosebud, Warragul and Narre Warren last weekend with the top 2 placegetters going to the state finals in October and November. By Morwell Tenpins - 25th August 2004 - Back to News The womens team defending last years state final title started off very sluggish and almost looked like they were going to miss the finals, until match 8 the 2nd last match of the day when they met Sale who at that stage looked almost assurred of a a 2nd place behind the runaway leaders Narre Warren. Sale started off with lots of strikes and coming into the 5th frame had a commanding lead, Morwell ladies obviously realised they need to pull out something special and they did, all the ladies seemed to find their line and lenght, and coming into the last frame everyone in the team had managed to beat their opponent giving Morwell a 6-1 win and turning a 3 point gap into a 2 point lead with one match to go. The draw favoured Morwell as they had to bowl Rosebud who had been struggling the last couple of matches and Sale had to play Narre Warren who seemed almost un-beatable on the day. The final results was that Morwell had a 5 point margin over Sale. Morwell will now travell to Geelong in October to defend the title they won last year. Making the final was a great effort as they missed several top players who did not compete this year. However the new bowlers that came into the team more then made up for the loss of so much experience. The mens team started off slow but by the 5th match started to show what team bowling was all about, and in the last 5 matches only lost 3 point from a possible 35. The effort was fantastic, as there were 5 new bowlers in the team from last years bronze Medalist. First time Bruce Aplin bowled a great 203 average to lead the men into a convincing win and they are all looking forward to taking on this years hot favourites Geelong at their home centre. Last years "All Star Member",Joe Tomasinski was very impressed with his new team and is looking forward to the challenge at Geelong. One of the good things to come out the Zone final for Morwell was the maturity shown by youngsters Nathan Luke and Colin Murphy and will give them a lot of confidence going into the state final. New comer Sean Gothe who bowled in the Victorian state team with Joe last Year also showed his Class and was well backed up by Peter Flanigan bowling in his 3rd state final along with Joe. Morwell has contested that last 2 state finals and finish 3rd on both occasions, so the motivation is to go one better this year.
The junior teams cruised into the state finals and both teams will travel to Mildura in November. The boys had four of last years finalist and will give this years final a real good shake. Bruce Mason , Graham Hodgskiss and Daley Matthies are in their final year as juniors and would be very pleased to win the shield again. Morwell last won the shield in 2001. Morwell girls are a team of new-comers with only Debra Bosma & Deanne Lacey having been in the team before. The other 4 girls will experience a state team final for the first time and were over the moon in not only making the final but finish in top position in the Zone final just ahead of Rosebud. The girls performed well as a team for the first time and will head to Mildura as one of the underdogs but with plenty of team spirit to take it to the favourites.
Morwell Tenpins will be holding a Fund Raiser on Sunday 5th at 4.30pm any one is welcomed, for $10.00 you get 2 games of bowling and a Hot Dog, all monies raised will go towards supplying a coach to take the juniors to Mildura. For bookings please contact, Sue, Debra and Judy on 5134 6450.
