Supermarkets Approved In CowesThe Minister for Planning yesterday announced his approval for two supermarkets in Cowes. By Bass Coast - 6th October 2010 - Back to News Acting CEO, Steve Piasente, said Council supported the Ministerial call in to provide consistency of decision making in relation to the two permits and the strategic intent of the Cowes Silverleaves, Ventnor and Wimbledon Heights Structure Plan.
"Council will be the responsible authority for the projects and be responsible for approving all plans," said Mr Piasente.
"If these developments go ahead they will provide greater retail choice and we welcome the increase in jobs that they would provide.
"The Minister has included a number of planning conditions on both of the permits."
Permit conditions include the installation of a signalised pedestrian crossing between the northern and southern access points to the development on the Boomerang site, a right hand turn into this development, tree guards for the Golden Cypress are required at both developments and replacement of vegetation at the development on the Hollydene site.
"We raised concerns about the possibility of a right had turn into the Boomerang development site and we’re pleased the Minister has imposed additional conditions," said Mr Piasente.
"There are three conditions that require that a post development traffic report be undertaken within three years to assess the impact of the right hand turn.
"The developer will be required to implement any Council and VicRoad recommendations at their own cost," continued Mr Piasente.
Mr Piasente also said he was pleased tree guards for the Golden Cypress had been included as a planning condition.
"The Golden Cypress Avenue is recognised by the National Trust of Australia as an Avenue of Significance, so it is important it is protected."
The developments which have been granted planning permits are a supermarket at 119-135 Thompson Avenue, Cowes (formerly the Boomerang Caravan Park) – includes construction of a 4,175 square metre supermarket; and Morgan & Griffin (M&G) supermarket at 114-122 Thompson Avenue, Cowes (known as the Hollydene site) – includes construction of a 2,330 square metre supermarket and speciality shops.
