Boolarra To Benefit From $25,000 Men’S Shed Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has pledged $25,000 for the creation of a Men’s Shed in Boolarra if a Coalition Government is elected on 27 November. By Russell Northe - 22nd November 2010 - Back to News Speaking in Boolarra on Saturday, Mr Northe said it was imperative that a Men’s Shed was available to assist with the health and wellbeing of men within the community.
"Problems with men's health, isolation, loneliness and depression are looming as major health issues for men," said Mr Northe. "Men's sheds can play a significant and practical role in addressing these and other men's issues, along with helping to connect men with their communities and mainstream society." The aim of Men’s Sheds are:
• To address the issues of men’s health (physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being) in the community.
• To engage men of all ages, differently-abled, youth, veterans and other groups of men of the communities in regional, rural, remote and urban areas;
• To support the social interaction of men in transitional periods (e.g. Redundancy, Bereavement, Retirement, Ill Health, Relocation, Divorce, Respite Care) in a non-exclusive, non-judgemental way;
• To share, disseminate and preserve the skills, abilities and interests that are relevant to the community. Mr Northe said in the wake of the emotionally and mentally draining event of the 2009 Bushfires, a Boolarra Men’s Shed could provide an extremely important service to those who are still coming to terms with the loss and devastation that occurred in our region at that awful time.
"It was definitely a hard time for many of the men and women in our communities. Unfortunately men often seem to not want to express their feelings and their emotions, so it is hoped that through the establishment of a Men’s Shed in Boolarra, there will be an opportunity for the men in this community to talk and discuss what issues are occurring in their lives. "But it will also serve as a great way for the men in Boolarra and district to have a general chat about the issues affecting our communities as a whole, and ways to address them. "It is important that our smaller communities have access to these types of facilities, which is why I am pledging $25,000 to facilitate the opening of Men’s Shed in Boolarra."
