June packed with ideas and inspiration for small businessJune is a month packed with ideas and inspiration for small business, with a large number of small business workshops being conducted during the month throughout Latrobe City. By Latrobe City Council - 6th June 2006 - Back to News Over two weeks, as part of an initiative of the Victorian state government, some nine workshops are scheduled throughout Latrobe City by various organisations all working together to acknowledge and celebrate the valuable contribution small businesses make to the local economy.
According to Latrobe City Senior Economic Development Officer, Leo Billington, now is an ideal time for everyone to take the opportunity to learn more about small business.
"The small business sector basically underpins our local economy. The dependence of our municipality upon the fortunes of this sector is significant. Jobs are generated which in turn determines our ability to attract more investment, either of a larger scale or even to create a greater variety of small to medium sized enterprises," Mr Billington said.
"In Latrobe City, about 90% of our total business sector comprises businesses with 20 or less employees. With a growing interest in small business start-ups, these workshops are very timely and highly relevant."
Participating organisations in the workshops include Latrobe City’s economic development unit, Monash University’s family and small business research unit, AusIndustry small business field officers, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and small business advisors on occupational health and safety. The newly established workplace rights advocate will also be presenting a workshop.
"Workshops will deal with financial issues such as accounting, marketing, ideas for effective networking, fundamentals about going into business, occupational health and safety and effective negotiations and collective bargaining," Mr Billington explained.
Mr Billington said the two-week schedule will be launched at a breakfast at Monash University on Tuesday 13 June at 7am and concludes with another breakfast on Friday 23 June.
"There will be a small cost for some workshops while others are free and bookings are recommended. The Victorian state government has provided a free event guide, ‘Energise Enterprise 06’ which outlines all the workshops being conducted throughout Victoria including Latrobe City," Mr Billington said.
The comprehensive guide is available at Latrobe City service centres, Regional Development Victoria in Breed Street, Traralgon; and the Gippsland Area Consultative Committee in Breed Street, Traralgon.
