Closure of Traralgon Indoor Sports and Aquatic CentreMember for Morwell Russell Northe has expressed his concern with the announcement that the Traralgon Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre will be closing its doors from today. By Portal Admin - 13th December 2016 - Back to News Mr Northe said he understood that 21 staff would sadly lose their jobs, including full time and casual employees.
"Our thoughts are with all staff and their families during what will be a very difficult time," Mr Northe said.
"The facility has been a popular place for swimmers, indoor netballers and cricketers amongst other sport and recreation pursuits for many years."
Mr Northe said now more than ever the need for a public heated indoor pool is required in Traralgon.
"Traralgon, with a population of around, 28,000 people desperately need an all-weather public swimming pool," Mr Northe said.
"The current 50 metre outdoor pool was opened in 1959, over half a century ago, and it is outdated and underused.
"There are some terrific indoor aquatic centres in other parts of regional Victoria that get used all year round for fitness and competition, for teaching kids to swim in a safe place, and for rehabilitation, as well as other activities and events."
Mr Northe said after two years and thousands of petition signatures the community were still calling on the Andrews Labor Government to provide vital funding to help build a new Traralgon heated indoor pool.
"Prior to the 2014 election the Liberal Nationals committed $9 million towards a new Traralgon heated indoor pool yet the Andrews Government has rejected calls for funding to be allocated towards this important facility," Mr Northe said.
"I call on the Andrews Labor Government to support the Traralgon community and pledge to upgrading Traralgon’s pool."
